Southern Pacific SD40 rebuild 7342 models a funky test scheme in the diesel terminal in West Oakland on March 3, 1981. Behind the SD40 you can see half of SP's GP40X fleet. Also, according to key Route Ken:
"Round steel poles with flat tops were used for catenary support poles along city streets and "city" private row's... The "lattice poles" in photo (Erector set piece) were erected by OA&B Line Crews on at least ONE side of the RR row to "assist" in supporting the (Bay Area Electric) catenary. I've never seen them on opposite sides from each other. You'll still see these "lattice" poles from Melrose to West Oakland (here and there), as well as out around Shellmound and vicinity. The concrete building in the background is the old West Oakland Substation. The West Oakland Substation (mid-1941 to 1990's) was used as headquarters for SP's "Electrical Dept" //Maint of Way, under Supervisors Byron Alvers and George Westphal. George Stewart was Division Engineer." About those lattice poles, according to Dr. Zharkoff, "they never carried the overhead for the red electrics. They did carry the high voltage transmission lines from Fruitvale Powerhouse to the substation at 7th and Cedar Sts., that concrete building in the background. Ever since the end of the red electrics, they've carry 60 cycle AC distribution for the West Oakland yard."
