Steve Sloan's Trains : Trip Notes : 1975 : Aug. 11, 1975

August 11, 1975 - My then soon to be first wife Candy and I were on Cajon Pass on this day. This may be the day I broke the shock mountings on my 1970 Nova driving it like it was a jeep! This was less than a month before I got married the first time.

Cajon Pass and Barstow

East Side of Pass

ATSF 4654 EMD SD26
Santa Fe SD26 4654 and friends are westbound climbing the east side of Cajon Pass on August 11, 1975. About this photo George Andrews said, "The lead SD26 was only 10 months out of its' rebuild in San Bernardino shops. This train, a Westbound by timetable direction, is between Lugo & Summit, CA."
ATSF 5706 EMD SD45-2
ATSF SD45-2 5706 on a coal train, likely a York Canyon Coal train, in Hesperia, CA on the east side of Cajon Pass on August 11, 1975. Yes, it was hot. According to Bob Finan, "The 5706 had five more years left to live; it and the 5687 (first 90 M.P.H geared SD45-2 built for "Super C" service), were destroyed in a horrible, fatal conflagration, at Pisgah, California on the Needles District in August, 1980. They rear-ended a stopped train at speed."
Ken Compton said, "The 5706 was one of the few SD45-2's with the late radiator intakes. Very cool!"
ATSF SD45-2 5646 and friends helped the 5706 on the coal train. Keel Middleton said, "As info, these are manned helpers. None of the engines in the photo were equipped with RCE. Also, those high speed SD45-2s were officially geared for 83 MPH. I know for a fact they would run faster than that!"
ATSF 8741 GE U36C
ATSF U36C 8741 near Hesperia, CA on the east side of Cajon Pass on August 11, 1975. Steven D. Johnson said, "(the) pic looks closer to Lugo, and well into the grade."

Barstow

ATSF 5507 EMD SD45
Santa Fe SD45 being hostled in Barstow, CA on August 11, 1975.
ATSF 5640 EMD SD45-2
Santa Fe SD45-2 5640 in Barstow on August 11, 1975. According to Andy Jackson, 5640 SD45-2 was delivered from EMD May 72 7391-16 delivered in pinstripe paint (BYT2 paint, repainted to Yellowbonnet (BYW2 paint) after 26Aug72 (obviously after August of 75 as well), rblt/rnum/rpnt to SPSF SD45-2u 7210[:1] Apr86, rnum/rpnt to ATSF 5810 BYW2 paint bef 1Jan91, maintenance to MK Apr94, rnum/rltr to BNSF 6460 21Feb98.
So it is now (or was) the BNSF 6460. Bob said, "FWIW, the first SD45-2 delivered in the "Yellowbonnet" was the 5662, in May 1973."
