Wednesday: Between Olean, NY and Driftwood, PA

In the Yard at Olean, NY

On October 5, 2011; Dan and I went to the offices at Olean, NY and found out we really made the right decision the day before when we chased the Hornell Turn instead of the Driftwood Turn (DFT) out of Olean. The DFT did not get out of Olean until almost dark and was so late it had gone dead on the law at Emporium PA. The crew from the morning switch job (OL-2) at Olean was being sent to Emporium to pick up the train.

Chasing the OL-2 running as the DFT

That is where we pick up the action in Emporium with the OL-2 job running as the DFT. After a short wait at Emporium PA, the crew from the morning switch job (OL-2) from Olean, NY arrived to pick up the Driftwood Turn (DFT) train. The train was pointed north but there were seven more cars now at North Driftwood for the WNYP. So, the power did a light move back south to North Driftwood. A Buffalo Line coal train, heading for the Buffalo & Pittsburgh (B&P) railroad, was switching at Driftwood, PA. This had no effect on the action at North Driftwood. It was a pain in the rear to locate the North Driftwood location. But, when we did, we were treated to a show of Alco smoke as the big MLW's accelerated north.

Chasing the DFT North

After the train left North Driftwood, PA it headed north at a good clip. The track was good and 7,200 MLW built Alco horsepower had no trouble with the short seven cars behind the locomotive. Despite the grade arround two percent, there was no time for us to doddle.

Back in Olean, NY

After the OL-2, running as the Driftwwod Turn (DFT), arrived at Olean we spent some time just soaking in the yard action in Olean, NY. Here are a couple of the Alcos that were at work that day.
