SP 1115 EMD SW8, SP Class ES408-2

Reportedly (sources) SP 1105 is an EMD SW8 built as SP 4610 SP Class DF302, Serial Number: 17337 Order No: 4180 Frame Number: 4180-7 Built: March 1953. In 1963 it's class was changed to SP Class DS-602. In the 1965 renumbering it became SP 1115 SP Class AS408-2. In 1977 it was sold to Chrome Crankshaft and in November 1978 it became Yreka Western Railroad 21.
According to Bill K. on Altamont Press, "The SW-8 #1115, (as depicted) was acquired by the Yreka Western RR in November of 1978 was issued the number 21. She currently sits on a YW siding in Montague, CA. Her sister SW-8, (#20) formerly Ex-S.P. #4608, then #1113, was also acquired by the YW in November 1978. She sat unused for several years due to having a bad crankshaft. Then she was used for parts to keep #21 operating. The 20 was scrapped in the summer of 2010. I have spent many hours in both 20 and 21, (mostly 21) hauling freight and even using 21 to pull the Blue Goose when the steam loco was B.O. Ahhh ... those were the good old days!"

George Andrews asked on Altamont Press, "Is that a Trombone Air horn under the cab roof??? The Horizontal pipe thingie..."
OPRRMS responded, "The whistle itself has been removed, but the piping is still there. The location of the photo is on the 50 Lead in front of the switchman's shanty at the Homestead, which was the on duty location at the Adeline Street end of the West Oakland yard. Steve, your dad would've worked there many, many times."

SP 1127 EMD SW8, SP Class ES408-4

Reportedly (sources) SP 1126, class ES408-4 was built Jan 1954, Serial number 19495, Frame number 4246-1, it was delivered as SP 4622, class DF-304. It was reclassified Class DS-604 in 1963. It was renumbered 1127, Class ES408-4, in 1965. It was sold to Chrome Crankshaft in 1984 then sold as (Lewis & Clark Railway) LINC 81 and sold as (Oregon Pacific Railroad 802) East Portland Traction 802 in 1996. As of May 2014, it is reportedly in the progress of rebuilding and renumbering as OPRR 1127.

OPRRMS said on Altamont Press on May 4, 2014, "As an aside the Nathan M3R1 horn shown in Steve's photo was saved and is in the possession of the OPR folks. It will be remounted on the locomotive, along with a trombone whistle, Pyle Gyralights, the train indicator/class light boxes, and the small number boards next to the headlights. The dynamic braking has also been restored."

Dick Samuels (a.k.a. Shortline Sammie) said on Altamont Press on May 4, 2014, "The Oregon Pacific has had 5 SW-8's; 801 is ex-BN 99 and is in service just being re-engined with an 8-567BE; the 901 (ex-CRANDIC 91 upgraded to SW-900) in service. Bamberger 602 was sold to Western Rail as a trade-in on GMD1 1413. The two ex-SP SW8-s on the roster were the 803 (SP 1105/T&NO 13) also sold to Western Rail as part of the GMD1 1413 deal. This leaves the OPR 802 (ex-SP 1127) which is at the Milwaukie shops undergoing restoration as SP 1127. Very little progress has been made during the past couple of years due to extensive trackwork and bridge maintenance. Both the 802 and 803 were on the Lewis & Clark after retirement from the SP roster.

"Hopefully this summer will see some sandblasting and painting. All of the parts for the Gyralights as well as the horn and number boards are on hand as well as a new exhaust stack is being fabricated to replace the ugly spark arrester that was installed after retirement from the SP roster.

"A set of 4 roller bearing combos is on hand to convert from friction bearings to allow interchange and alignment control draft gear is being installed.

"It has a 8-567BC engine which will be completely overhauled as well as we will go through the main and aux generators to insure reliability. Dynamic brakes were made fully functional prior to starting the tear down."

Special Notes

NOTE: If anything is my "life's work" it's my train photos. — If you scan an analog photo of mine, or if you share a digital photo I took that does not have my photo credit, add something like "Photo by Steve Sloan" directly onto the image. It's not enough to say "Photo by Steve Sloan" in the text caption. People download photos off the Internet/Social Media platform and whatever is in the text does not stick to the photo. Then, they get reshared and that data is lost. I deserve credit for my work.

You may not use my photos for profit and/or as part of, or to sell, a product or service without my consent.
