SP 3114 Alco C628, SP Class AS628-1

Reportedly (sources) SP 3114 was shipped in April 1965 as SP 4857, construction number 3401-13, SP Class DF-504. In 1965 it was renumbered SP 7116, SP Class AF628-2. In Sept. 1973 it was downgraded to switcher status and became 3114, SP Class AS628-1.

According to Adam Twiss on Facebook (April 23, 2014) "It was downgraded to switcher status. The Centuries had their transition switches deactivated so they were limited to 25 MPH as a result of this as their last assignment was at West Colton. The units handled the east end of the yard while the new SD38-2s handled the west end of the yard as well as the hump as they were equipped with pacesetter controls."

3114 was retired in April 1979 and scrapped the following summer.

Southern Pacific C628s 3134 and former demonstrator 3117 are in Los Angeles, CA at the Bullring on Sunday November 17, 1974.
This was posted on Altamont Press on May 7, 2014. Bob2 commented:
Probably a "C" yard job bringing cars for the mill, the freight sheds, and the street jobs. These were used for a while at Taylor and in the LA Terminal, at the time they were phasing out the old high nose Baldwins that were used on pull downs and such (also largely a useless six axle braking sleds). They were extremely unpopular with both hogheads and crews. This cut is indicative of a period a period when the "River Station" complex (Midway/Cornfield, Bullring, Links) was busy, but those days were fading fast.

Soon enough, GVD made sure most of these turkey's were shipped off to Colton, where they were equally unpopular, but no one in management out there cared much. SP had been through several big orders of SW 1500's by then, and with the 1974 oil crisis and depression, business was down, and there were enough EMD SW's and SD-7's (much more reliable and much preferred) for this kind of work.

Twelve years later I, my fireman, and our whole crew, all took the buyout, working the last job to work the "River Station" yard complex, the "mill" job, out of the Shops, on a regular basis. First stop "Sams" stand, for coffee.

Special Notes

NOTE: If anything is my "life's work" it's my train photos. — If you scan an analog photo of mine, or if you share a digital photo I took that does not have my photo credit, add something like "Photo by Steve Sloan" directly onto the image. It's not enough to say "Photo by Steve Sloan" in the text caption. People download photos off the Internet/Social Media platform and whatever is in the text does not stick to the photo. Then, they get reshared and that data is lost. I deserve credit for my work.

You may not use my photos for profit and/or as part of, or to sell, a product or service without my consent.

Special Thanks!

To all the great folks who helped me out with information for these Web pages!
