- It used to be I shot black and white film for the boring stuff. Color film was expensive for me In those days Southern Pacific (SP) SD45's and UP SD40's were considered boring, like GEVOs today. SP 9076, UP 3049, SP 9195 and possibly others lead a freight around the wye at Davis, California on an unrecorded date around 1973. The train is coming off the CalP and heading up what now is the California Northern. Then, it was the West Valley Line of the Southern Pacific. According to WAF, (This train) "is the OPS from Oakland, the general merchandise train (mostly lumber empties) between Oakland and Portland. Whether it actually went all the way to Portland is unknown. I suspect it got humped in Eugene and its Portland/Seattle cars forwarded to Portland."

Allen said on Train Orders, "Chevron oil train from Utah. As Wes said it's going to their refinery in Richmond. Started running mainly because of the Arab Oil Embargo...the refinery could not receive enough imported crude oil for processing. It was such a success it lasted until the late '80's from what I recall. The UP and Santa Fe handled these trains at the end. I remember seeing one in Feather River Canyon (with no camera)."
WAF (Wes) said, "By the end of the 70s, the oil train was only running like once a week."

Tacoma tide flats
July 1973
- MILW E29 EF-3 GE/Alco
- Milwaukee Road E29 in the Tacoma tide flats in July 1973. I had previously called these mud flats, George Andrews said, "although mud can still be found in copious amounts, the area is actually referred to as "The Tide Flats", as was The Milwaukee Road yard in Tacoma. The former yard area is now a large Maersk-Sealand container facility."
- MILW SG-1 SLUG
- Slugs get there power from an external source, a diesel locomotive. So you might think of SG-1 as another type of Milwaukee Road "electric locomotive" in the Tacoma tide flats in July 1973. According to L. A. Scrafford, "The SG-1 was built from an Alco RS3 (463) and was called the "Twinkie". It was usually mated with U28B's or U30B's and was used mainly on the old Tacoma Eastern Line to Morton."

NOTE: If anything is my "life's work" it's my train photos. — If you scan an analog photo of mine, or if you share a digital photo I took that does not have my photo credit, add something like "Photo by Steve Sloan" directly onto the image. It's not enough to say "Photo by Steve Sloan" in the text caption. People download photos off the Internet/Social Media platform and whatever is in the text does not stick to the photo. Then, they get reshared and that data is lost. I deserve credit for my work.
